Why Does My RV Toilet Keep Running Water?

If your RV toilet continues running water after flushing, the most common cause is a faulty water valve. The water valve controls the flow of fresh water into the toilet bowl when the flush pedal is pressed. When this valve begins to wear out or stick, it may not shut off completely, allowing water to continue flowing into the bowl.

In most cases, replacing the RV toilet water valve will stop the running water and restore normal flushing.

Common Symptoms of a Running RV Toilet

If your RV toilet water valve is failing, you may notice:

  • Water continues flowing into the bowl after flushing
  • You hear running water even when the pedal is not pressed
  • The toilet slowly fills with water
  • The water stops only if you lift the pedal back up manually
  • Water flow never fully shuts off

These symptoms usually indicate the valve is no longer sealing properly.

Most Common Cause: Worn Water Valve

The water valve sits at the back of the toilet and connects to the RV’s fresh water supply. When you press the flush pedal, the valve opens and allows water to rinse the bowl.

Over time the internal rubber components inside the valve can:

  • wear out
  • become stiff
  • accumulate mineral deposits
  • fail to close completely

When this happens, the valve allows water to continue flowing even after the pedal is released.

The Fix

Replace the RV toilet water valve.

Replacement valves are available for many Thetford and Dometic RV toilets and are usually inexpensive and easy to install.

Possible Cause: Flush Pedal Not Returning

Sometimes the water valve itself is not the problem. If the flush pedal does not return fully to its resting position, the valve may remain partially open.

Symptoms

  • Pedal feels sticky
  • Pedal stays partially down
  • Water stops if you pull the pedal upward

The Fix

Inspect or replace the flush pedal assembly or linkage components.

Possible Cause: Debris or Mineral Buildup

Hard water deposits or debris can sometimes prevent the water valve from closing properly.

The Fix

In some cases, cleaning the valve may help temporarily. However, replacing the valve is usually the most reliable solution.

How to Prevent RV Toilet Water Valve Problems

To extend the life of your RV toilet water valve:

  • periodically clean mineral buildup
  • use clean water when flushing
  • avoid harsh chemicals that damage rubber seals
  • inspect the pedal mechanism regularly

Replacing a worn water valve is one of the quickest and most common RV toilet repairs, and it typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
